CALLED

Having been called by Jesus Christ to “come follow me”, we use our gifts to equip and serve others as we grow in grace and faith.

“DROPS OF WATER” – Have you bought your drop of water yet?  Please buy a “drop” to help our youth participate in the summer Mission Trip to Tijuana, Mexico, and to help fund our other outreach projects.

Summer Brunches – Today’s Summer Brunch is hosted by members of the Sanctuary Choir & the Alleluia Ringers.   The Music Ministry here at SLC is all about congregational involvement.  Your gifts of music are always welcome.  We have many different opportunities for musical participation (including singing hymns and liturgy with enthusiasm during worship!!).  Opportunities for involvement in our music ministry include the Sanctuary Choir, Alleluia

Handbell Ringers, Children’s Chime Choir, Brass Ensemble, Small Ensembles, Soloists, Instrumentalists, occasional Children’s Choir, Liturgists, and a new “Contemporary Band” which we hope to be developing soon.  Your donations at today’s brunch will be used to purchase additional music and instruments for our musical groups who help lead our worship services. Come join us!

Amanda Olson de Castillo for her Well Project in Guatemala.

COMMISSIONED

Having been called and connected, we are commissioned to act out our love in Christ within the world.

Disaster Relief in Pacific County, Washington – PacDRO (Pacific County Disaster Recovery Organization), is a recently formed non-profit group addressing the unmet needs of the communities of Pacific County (broadly, Raymond, South Bend, Naselle, and the Long Beach peninsula) in the wake of the severe storm of December 2007.  PacDRO is headed by Pastor Laurie Johnson of the dual parishes of First Lutheran, South Bend & Our Savior’s, Raymond.  A great deal of the damage in Pacific County was due to high winds, and now that FEMA awards and insurance claims have been closed there are a growing number of people with unmet needs related to that storm.  PacDRO is ready to begin work on damaged homes, and  finds a significant amount of the work includes debris clean-up, roofing, and some flood-related demolition.  Volunteers are needed who are able to spend a day  or several days, working with us to ensure that people are living in sanitary conditions.  There is a need for both skilled and unskilled workers, in particular, folks with roofing experience.  The phone number for PacDRO, is 360-942-0081.  The mailing address is P.O. Box 54, South Bend, WA 98586.  Email:pacdrohelps@aol.com..  Can you spare some time?  See the email on the kiosk!

ELCA World Hunger and Disaster Appeal – With a swiftness that we could not have imagined only weeks ago, the waters have brought chaos to a large area of the central United States.  The flooding that is moving south in the Mississippi River Valley follows unusually destructive tornados in several states, and a humanitarian crisis has risen after an immigration raid in Postville, Iowa.  Tornados have caused fatalities in 15 states, and at least 11 synods are currently involved in relief operations with ELCA Domestic Disaster Response, an unprecedented number in our history.  In the midst of these disasters, Scripture speaks to us.  “God is our refuge and our strength, a very present help in trouble.  Therefore we will not fear, though the earth should change, though the mountains shake in the heart of the sea; though its waters roar and foam, though the mountains tremble with its tumult.”  (Psalm 46:1-3)  Please join Rev. Mark Bishop, Presiding Bishop, ELCA, in prayer and action.  Please pray for all who are facing adversity, including the hidden challenges that seep in after media attention leaves: the destruction of this year’s crop and productivity of cropland for years to come; the loss of homes and neighborhoods; the severing of ties from each other and histories in particular places; and the troubling emotions and thoughts that erode confidence and faith.  Pray that God’s Spirit sustain them in the hope of God’s faithfulness, shown to us in Jesus Christ.  We will be the body of Christ to those who yearn for a comforting presence.  We will be the gentle hands that hold those who yearn for the healing that Jesus brought.  Through our service, God will speak their names and hold them as a treasured possession.  “But now thus says the Lord, he who created you, O Jacob, he  who formed you, O Israel; Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name, you are mine.  When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you; when you walk through fire you shall not be burned, and the flame shall not consume you.  For I am the Lord your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Savior.”  Isaiah 43:1-3

YES! I Want to Help! Your prayers and donations are urgently needed. Gifts to the ELCA Disaster Response (either Domestic or International) will augument work where help is most needed.  Please make a check payable to: Silverdale Lutheran Church, indicating where your donation should be Directed “Domestic Disaster Response” or “International Disaster Response”.  The church will send a check(s) to the ELCA office.

SLC Family Camp 2008

It’s that time of year again to make your plans to join us for family camp at Olympic Lutherhaven at Wildcat Lake.  If you’ve never had a chance to join us, this might just be the year!  Whether you like to stay in a cabin, pitch a tent, or bring your RV, Lutherhaven has it all to offer.  One must admit that there is no better setting to worship, swim, play and have fellowship with other Christians so close to home.

This year we have a wonderful addition to our event.  We will be sharing our time there with Port Madison Lutheran Church from Saturday August 9th through Friday August 15th.  Please make it a point to join us sometime during this camping window and share in the fun.  You can stay for as short a time as an afternoon or as long as the entire week.  Look for a sign-up sheet on the church kiosk to reserve your time and spot today.

Feel free to call Kurt Thompson or Bob Arper through the Church Office at 692-9263 for more information.
